January 27 – January 31 marks Data Privacy Week 2025, an annual international effort to raise awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and educating individuals and businesses on data protection challenges.
As a Data Privacy Week Champion, Abacus Group is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the National Cybersecurity Alliance. Data privacy is everyone’s business – especially as the amount of data we create, capture, copy, and consume daily continues to grow on a global scale.
Every time you go online, you generate a wealth of data—your interests, purchases, browsing habits, and even details about your physical well-being. Websites, apps, and devices across the globe collect this information, often without you realizing the full extent of it. For example, your smartphone may track your steps, while your favorite shopping app logs your purchasing history.
While you may not have complete control over how every piece of data about you is gathered, you do have the right to data privacy. By adopting a few smart habits, you can take charge of your personal information. Your data is valuable—make sure you have a say in how it's used.
Here are some simple, easy tips you that will help you manage your data privacy:
Nowadays, when you download a new app, open a new online account, or join a new social media platform, you will often be asked for access to your personal information before you can even use it. This data might include your geographic location, contacts, and photos.
For many businesses, this data is incredibly valuable. Before sharing your information, ask yourself whether the service is truly worth the tradeoff. Consider:
Take a few moments to review and update the privacy settings on your apps, accounts, and devices. Most platforms provide these options in a “Settings” section, allowing you to control how much of your personal data is shared.
For better privacy protection, consider sharing less rather than more. You don’t have to update every account at once—start with the most frequently used services and gradually make it a habit to fine-tune all your settings.
Data privacy and data security go hand-in-hand. Along with managing your data privacy settings, follow some simple cybersecurity tips to keep it safe:
Data privacy awareness is for life, not just for a week in January. By staying informed and taking proactive steps, you can maintain greater control over your data privacy and security. Your personal information is valuable—take the necessary precautions to protect it!
